Live Report: Loyle Carner at the Brighton Dome

Benjamin Coyle-Larner stands apart from the UK rap crowd, coming across as one of the most relatable, genuine, kind and thoughtful MCs of the last decade. Naturally, he is also now one of the biggest artists in the scene having just sold out Wembley Arena and added an additional date at the Hammersmith Apollo. A universally loved and respected artist.

"Hate" was Loyle's comeback single back in 2022 and holy moly was it a fantastic set opener. The chopped vocal samples getting an instant reaction from a crowd filled with anticipation. Ben was joined by a live band that introduced the groove dramatically as the man himself made his entrance straight down the middle of the stage. The band dropped out to give Ben space to drop the fantastic chorus which was sung along unanimously by the love-filled crowd.

Loyle Carner's fantastic third album Hugo dropped last year. Named after his father's car as we found out in a mid-set story that's apparently going viral (and for good reason). He spoke about the impact of growing up with an absent father and the frustration and anger that came with that. Forgiving his father and beginning to understand him during driving lessons being a cathartic experience and inspiration for the album.

An incredibly well-balanced set featuring 9 songs from the recent record, 7 from Not Waving, but Drowning and a couple from the debut. Loyle's earlier material is classic at this point with songs such as "Loose Ends" and "Ain't Nothing Changed" being massive sing-alongs. "Loose Ends" featured a buttery smooth transition into "Ice Water", a personal favourite funky banger. Other set highlights include anthemic tunes "Yesterday", "You Don't Know" and "Nobody Knows (Ladas Road)" as well as a beautiful, laid-back favourite of Loyle himself, "Still".

The obvious love and overwhelming happiness in the room was incredible. It's been a while since I've been at a gig with such a positive vibe. Loyle Carner had the crowd hanging on every word and conducted the mood of the room in a way that only the most skilled artists can do. I felt this overwhelmingly during a 5-minute standing ovation that Ben received in the second half of the set. He was unable to speak over the deafening cheers of the crowd. It was a beautiful moment with an

incredible artist feeling the physical manifestation

of what his music means to so many.

Loyle undoubtedly has one of the most adoring fanbases in the UK and without a doubt he deserves it.
