riff

noun (c)

in jazz or popular music, a tune that continues or appears regularly in a piece of music while other parts change or are added.

Interview with Turnstile for the UK Student Music Network

GROAT was founded in January 2023 by Luke Miller and Rishi Shah, as a multimedia publication, podcast and brand inspired by the million dollar question: what is the greatest riff of all time?

Contrary to popular belief, a riff is not limited to that six-stringed instrument. Riffs can be found in any instrument, melody or genre, and GROAT aims to champion a wide range of our favourite artists across hip-hop, electronic, pop, soul, jazz and beyond - as well as more classic 'riff' genres: rock, punk and metal.

We have been mates since secondary school, and are currently students in Brighton (Luke) and Leeds (Rishi), two cities with eclectic music scenes which we are heavily involved with through music journalism, TV, radio, photography and playing in bands ourselves!

Rishi also writes for outlets such as NME and Kerrang! while Luke runs his own music and film media outlet called GnarlyMarmaladeMedia. Luke is also part of a collective called STAY UGLY and bands called The Shaks and Nel Blu, while Rishi plays in a band called Public House.
